Resources for Costume Design

Here are a few resources I’ve come to use over the years for costuming shows (or the odd ambitious Halloween costume).

Please note: I in no way receive any compensation from these companies, nor do I have any relationship with them. I simply think they have great products. I’ll keep adding to this list as I discover new gems. Enjoy!

Modern Clothing Resources

ThredUp

If I could turn back time…I can’t tell you the years of my life I have spent at thrift shops, looking for the right clothing item for someone. Those days are gone now that ThredUp is on the scene. The great thing about this online thrift store is that you can shop anytime and anywhere, and just for the size and description you are looking for. Short sleeve canary yellow top in an XS? A quick search in ThredUp will provide 50 results. It’s been a real game changer and makes shopping for used clothing a breeze. The only downside is that you have to plan a bit ahead, as your order will take a few days to reach you.

Poshmark

Poshmark is a great place to find upscale used clothing and accessories. Be warned, there are no returns at Poshmark, so buy carefully.

Everlane

Everlane is a great resource for sourcing new basics. Unlike similarly priced stores, they are not “fast fashion”, which is incredibly destructive in terms of cost to the environment and workers. Everlane’s motto is “Ethical Factories, Radical Transparency”. They provide a list of all their factories, and each factory is given a compliance audit to evaluate factors like fair wages, reasonable hours, and environment. Everlane also offers a break down of materials to labor cost on garments.

Historical Clothing Resources

Historical Emporium

In most cases, heading down to your local vintage store is a good bet. But when you need clothing that is from an older period, say Victorian, Edwardian, or Old West, check out Historical Emporium, your online resource for all those things. Note: I have only ordered a few men’s clothing items from them, and so far it’s been a good experience. I can’t speak to quality or accuracy of their women’s clothing, as I have not seen it up close. They have a nice online catalog of styles.
